'Piercer of Darkness' (Bringer of Light)
The Back story or Kaupapa
The Roaring Lion; I’ve heard that a lion roaring in the African wilds at night is an unforgettable sound, a sound that reverberates, echoes and travels for great distances.
And that Lions Roar to:
1. Claim their Territory; deterring potential rivals and preventing conflicts
2. Unity and Cohesion; a call to rally scattered family members, ensuring unity and cohesion.
3. Strength and Authority; male lions typically have a deeper, louder, and more prolonged roar… my land, my family, my children, my beliefs
4. A Call to ‘War’ (or to hunt in the case of Lions)
5. The roar challenges the ‘competition’ and ‘clears the air’
Reflecting on the sound of the lion’s roar piercing the night, piercing the darkness, some us older folks may remember Frank Perretti, who wrote two novels in the 80’s; ‘Piercing the Darkness’ and ‘This Present Darkness’. Great fictional reads that seemed ‘shine a light’ on images of spiritual warfare that the Body of Christ had not imagined quite like that before (Ephesians 6:Our struggle is not with flesh and blood, but with principalities, powers…). Consequently this shofar declares the Lion’s Roar ‘piercing this present darkness’ in New Zealand 2024-2025. These are the images carved onto this shofar; the Lion’s Roar, the Cross - Sword of the Spirit piercing ‘these present darknesses’ with the stylised New Zealand flag among the silver ferns securing the declaration firmly in our geo-political context and for our unique commission and contribution to other nations. The grape vines of the increasing Kingdom of God fill in the gaps.
But knowingly the Lion is also a biblical, figurative and prophetic portrayal of the Messiah – The Lion of Judah who says about Himself ‘I Am the Light of the World – I Am the Way the Truth and the Light’.
The Lion of Judah is the Bringer of Light
